Meet Lola, one of The Bays’ dedicated volunteers
Every week, The Bays Aged Care residents, many of whom are football enthusiasts, look forward to a visit from volunteer, Lola. Lola keeps them updated with how their favourite team has fared in its matches and, more importantly, how they did in the footy tipping competition.
Lola has been volunteering at The Bays Aged Care for over eight years now. What started out as work experience as a young student, has evolved into two days a week spent working in the Lifestyle team, bringing joy and sharing her special, youthful energy with residents.
“I love coming to The Bays Aged Care and interacting with the residents and the wonderful team. There is a lovely atmosphere and I’ve built such beautiful relationships – they’re an extended part of my family now,” she says.
Manager, Hasika, says at the heart of our community are some incredible individuals – a group of twelve active volunteers who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to enhancing the lives of residents.
Lola enjoys managing the footy tipping competition, particularly the weekly conversations with the residents who are taking part. “Football is a great conversation starter! Every week I do the rounds, chat to them and help them pick their favourite team to win. Then once I’ve tallied up the scores, I let them know how they’re doing and enjoy the fun competitiveness between the residents and staff,” she says.
Lola also helps rally up the residents for bus trips, concerts and walking groups, and assists with lifestyle activities, cooking sessions, serving morning or afternoon tea or visiting residents in their rooms.
“I love hearing their stories and being there for them,” she says.
